Winning the Invisible War

The fight among the forces of darkness, represented by Satan and also the forces of light representing the God’s compassion is as old as the history of mankind. It's a war fought on a battlefield of human soul. Milton gave expression to this in his “Paradise Lost” and E. M. Bounds gives a forceful presentation of this spiritual war in his book “Winning the Invisible War”.

The title in the book is really apt. The war is real, but invisible. The loss, although colossal, just isn't in material terms. This spiritual battle is raging all of the time, with no ceasefire, with out respite. E.M. Bounds gives expression to this eternal war in his book “Winning the Invisible War”. This book shows the fervency and depth of his devotion which is influenced by reformed theology. It is a treatise on identifying the forces of enemy and the defence that need to be deployed.

The first 5 chapters are devoted to identifying the enemy by revealing his personality, his characteristics and his methods. Inside following 5 chapters, Bounds, being a military strategist, mobilizes the forces to face this enemy. He conducts a SWOT – strength, weakness, opportunity and threats - analysis. His strategy is according to this analysis. The biblical plans are transformed into a battle plan that ensures victory – the victory which is imminent because it is fight for faith.

This becomes a spiritual battle. The weapons applied by Satan are doubt, despair and eventual destruction of the believers. Here Bounds seems to be influenced by John Bunyan’s ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’. Right here the pilgrim is transformed into a fighter – a crusader.

Bounds is outstanding instance of faith. His weapons are weapons which are bestowed by God, as he writes:

The weapons that we have to wage war against the devil arrive from God. They're only ours by virtue of our relationship with God. With no Him, we are actually nothing! We can get up every morning and go in the "imaginary exercise" of putting on our armor with all of its weapons, but to truly walk in this position and to determine them extremely jobs in our life techniques that we have to live within the presence of God.

The thesis of Bounds is basically a replication of Christian faith. The complete procedure of war is in fact biblical in conception and explication. The Bible talks about good angels, damaging angels, Satan and also the nature and workout of each. Bounds has only put the spiritual war inside a non-sensational manner showing how the believers can resist evil, fight it and overcome it.

Bounds wrote this book simply because he felt that the provide generation has lost its moorings. He wrote: “we have lost that deep conviction about eternal points that are evident features of all great spiritual movements” (Bounds 1984, 58). Bounds’ notion of prayer like a mighty weapon is resonant of all biblical faith that is expressed by an additional Christian writer Wesley Duewel: “The good need of our world, our nation, and our churches is individuals who know how to prevail in prayer. We require prevailing leadership to mold a new generation of prayer warriors.” (Duewel 1990, 22, 25).

“Winning the Invisible War” is often a clarion call towards believers that Satan is here; he should be identified, fought and vanquished.
