Heart of Darkness: Critique

Ben Smith Ms. Krumm English 4 AP November 7, 2009 Dragons, Phoenixes, and Other Fantastical Creatures Through his whole kit as a psychologist, Sigmund Freud essentially created psychoanalytical criticism. Critics credit him and his scat with the founding of psychoanalytical literary criticism. Freuds theories focus more or less dreams and dream-like qualities of stories and characters within them. In Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, this particular guinea pig of criticism has bases throughout the novel. Heart of Darkness contains mirroring themes, like bulwark versus its lack, civilization versus savagery, light versus darkness (Ridley, par.1). He noticeably focuses on themes based off of dark and light. The development of his characters and their actions greatly contrive those themes. Marlow, Joseph Conrads main character, can only be fictitious to represent the role of the light. Throughout much of the novel, Marlow converses kinda often of a god he probably believes in. He talks concerning the idea of something you can set up and bowknot d consume before, and offer a sacrifice to…. (Conrad 4), and often refers to the untoward….atmosphere (Conrad 8). Marlows adventure provides a chance for him to discover his own reality (Ridley, par.2).

Readers discover that Marlow detests liars and the taint of death (Conrad 23) that they hold onto. He also explains his disliking of work and how no man (Conrad 25) enjoys it. Marlow shows himself as a levelheaded man holding steadfast to his morals, even in the face of temptation. Instead of participating in the orgies and parties taking place, Marlow devotes his time, rather, to mend[ing] drafty pipes, watch[ing] the steering, curcumvent[ing] the snags (Ridley, par.10). He discusses his distaste for people like Kurtz. The kinship (Conrad 32) he shares with the creatures disgusts Marlow; however, he never denies his own faults.
