Young April 23, 2007 The Lesson The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara is considered to be a wonderful maneuver of fiction because of its use of language, humanistic theme, symbolism, and non-genre plot. The Lesson examines the realization of economic shabbiness in 1960s America through the eyes of a boylike girl. In Sylvia, Bambara creates a proud, sensitive, tough girl who is farthermost too smart to ignore the realities virtually her, even though she knows it might be easier to do so. At the same time, Bambara creates a host of characters, all of whom help Sylvia explore and demonstrate the issues that prospect poor people and minorities in the United States. Sylvia, who is also the teller tells in fib in a first somebody point of view and narrates in vernacular English. Sylvia is a young African American girl, probably around fourteen historic period old, who is very judgmental about the world around her. The story begins with a group of poor, uneducated, lower class city kids stand up in front of a mailbox, preparing themselves for another day of macrocosm taught by Mrs. Moore. command Moore is unlike the other African Americans in the neighborhood.
