Brenda Bridges Rosie the Riveter During the 1940s, while working outside the office was not advanced for American women, the pagan division of labor by sexual practice ideally placed white middle-class women in the home and the men in the work-place. The cultural division by sexual activity was reinforced during the depression years when it was considered that working women were taking the bank line of an unemployed man. At the beginning of World warfare II the government was faced with labor shortages as it needed to dramatically increase its production of war materials at the same metre the men were being shipped overseas. To overcome the previously established cultural division of labor ideology, the government created a fictional image to recruit women into the men so that the manufacturing and production contracts could be fulfilled. As such, the government launched its propaganda campaign to lure women into the workforce. One of the better know campaigns was that of Rosie the Riveter. Rosie the Riveter was developed during the 1940s as advertisement iconically symbolizing the effort of the American woman and the role and effort to supersede the men in the manufacturing and production of war materials during World War II.
