The impact of industrial urbanization on the Canadian working people from 1867-1914
The impact of industrialization on the working people before 1914 was massive. Canada morphed from a largely artless macrocosm of eighty percent in 1867 to an urban state of approximately fifty percent in 1921.[i] This was not only an internal movement from the outlandish to urban areas. It was a end point of a combination of factors that greatly transformed Canada and the life of Canadians. industrialization and immigration were to greatly change the face of Canada and its society. Issues ranging from recreation to sanitization arose from the increase in population and the change in rural versus urban mix. It is highly unlikely that industrialization had the same contact in each city across the country. It would probably be fair to say that similar effects were felt by most of Canadas urban working classes, prior to 1914.
Immigration set the population of Canada from 3.5[ii] million in 1867 to a base of sound under 8 million in 1914.[iii] Population became progressively concentrated in the cities.



The cities were not prepared for this. Many cities grew in multiples of their original population. Growth was not evenly spread out. The westerlyern and substitution Canada boomed. The Maritimes did not participate in the growth to anywhere near the same degree.[iv] The west was producing a market for central Canadas industrial output and the railroads provided for the movement of raw and finished goods to and from the west to central Canada.[v] Industrialization, combined with immigration, was responsible for many of the issues that the urban population faced.
