Many customers and suppliers are implementing lean procedures and are asking their allocators to do the same. The trouble is that lean processes have not been well defined for distributors. To better understand lean, we must understand where it came from and what the reasons were for creating lean processes. The industrial Revolution involved automation of manufacturing lines with the intent to increase both the speed and volume of material flow. To increase process throughput, unneeded processes were created to prevent any shutdowns.

Redundancies took the form of excess labor dexterity (extra machine capacity, human resources, etc) or stored capacity (inventory). JIT proposed maintaining capacity while eliminating waste, especially inventory.
