Salks arrive was a garment worker, and his mother had always encouraged her sons to do well in their education. He was the eldest of ternion sons, followed by Herman, then Lee. At the age of twelve, Jonas Salk entered Townsend Harris High school. When he was sixteen, he began attending New York University, and began working after school to encourage pay for his education. At first, he had hopes of becoming a lawyer, entirely soon changed his major to medical research. In 1936 he returned to N. Y. U. trail of Medicine, and graduated in 1939. Even as a child, he was said to be well focused on his school work and had little time for playing around, which helped him to succeed by and by in life.

Although his family lived well during the Great Depression, there was only abounding money for the necessities. On June 9, 1938, Salk married his first wife, Donna Lindsay.
