A brief summary of surealism.

Surrealism

Surrealism was a twentieth century movement in stratagem (and literature) of expressing images without order or coherence, like a pipe dream. Andre Breton is considered to be the main creator of surrealism. Breton saw his movement as a rebellion against the accepted logical, social, and moral orders. Surrealist art went beyond writing or painting objects as they looked in reality. Their work showed objects in exotic and distorted forms, unnatural colours, as in a dream (subconscious and imaginative). He was influenced by a psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (who is best know for his theories on the subconscious mind and dreams.)
Sigmund Freud was a psychiatrist from Austria who explored subconsciousness and understand peoples dreams. His theories were about having humors, thoughts or things in your mind that were kept surreptitious in your life. Breton created artwork related to dreaming and showing the cabalistic thoughts of the mind in art.

This new phase in 20th century art was based on the idea that in that location were treasures (or strange creatures) enigmatical in the our minds. In this oddball idea of reality, the problems and conflicts Breton had in his life, could find resolution. Salvador Dali thought that truth itself, was actually hidden and because of this, much of his art was based on this idea.



Although Dali did not startle surrealism, his contributions improved it and saved it. Salvador Dali defined surrealism in the way he lived his life, and in the art he created.

Surrealism flourished between the 1920s to the 1940s. The epicentre of surrealism at the time was Paris, France. It then spread throughout Europe and to the watch of the world. Rather than a piece of art being labelled as surrealist for its set of certain stylistic attitudes, it is more lots seen as a way of thinking and even a way of life, a mode of thought and action, (Meaning that many surrealist artists move to write surrealist literature too).
