It was June of 2007 when I arrived in United States. It was an unforgettable day. That is when my American Dream started. I was misfortunate to leave my family in Brazil, anxious to meet my American soldiers family, happy to be in an airplane for the first clock and so nervous to start learning English by the means of cultural immersion.
Once I arrived at the multinational airport in New York, I looked around as someone was supposed to be there, holding a gull with my name. I walked everywhere around the airport with my 2 bags and a carry on which totaled about 150 pounds. I finally called the Au Pair agency nevertheless it was a nightmare; she asked me to spell my last(a) name but what she didnt know is that in Brazil, our last name is actually a combination of mothers last name and novices last name. At that time, I really wished my last name was only Silva, Santos, Drew, Reed, Mehta (my currently last name)… no, it was Cavalcanti de Jesus. The process of persuasion in Portuguese and translating it to English before each earn was a painful experience. She also asked me to explain where I was simply located.



I was about to give up and find my expressive style back but a good Samaritan offered to help me and the lady finally got the necessary information to find me. My first lesson lettered about Americans, they are willing to offer assistance to a fellow in trouble. After spending three hours at the airport, I finally found the driver holding the constrict with my last name misspelled.
I was finally at the Au Pair school at Saint John University. We were a group of au pairs from everywhere in the world but slowly I saw the small groups being formed. If it were a game, it would be the Latin Americans versus Europeans, except the German girls (and a boy) do their own group. Our group had a hard time to construe the instructors.
