Exploring Your Social World: Starbucks
I chose to observe a place that is real vibrant in the morning, especially in an
urban setting. A place where people go to touch the initial bursts of energy that
will carry them throughout the morning. A place where one can prepare for the workday
ahead. This place is very relaxing, despite the amount of traffic that it brings in daily.
It always seems to be comfortable and socially inclined for its customers. It is also
known as one of the most notable coffee bean shops in America.
I chose to perform my observation on January 26th, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 10:03
AM. The object of my observation was to observe the process people took to purchase
their beverages and/or snacks, the way they on the watch their beverages after purchase,
and what they did after they prepared their beverages. The club process was pretty
much set in jewel to say the least. Customers would enter the shop and stand in a line
leading to the cash register, the associate would take their order, and they would
proceed to the wait line. The preparation stage was somewhat similar in the event that
it was pretty much the same for everyone, but it had minor differences.
This is because diverse people order different drinks and put different condiments in them. Therefore, this process differs slightly from individual to individual. The actions people took after they prepared their beverages differed a lot usually. Most people would just give-up the ghost the shop and be on their way to begin their days. However, different people gathered and chatted about daily topics, read a book while sipping their beverage, or just hopped on their laptops.
all over the course of my observation, a total of approximately 123 people
entered the coffee shop with intent to purchase something. Some people came in
