Definition- Work Motivation
Work motivation is รขa cognitive process which determines the direction, transport and persistence of behaviour (performance) in the workplace. It has three components: Direction (the engaging of activities we engage in); Intensity (how much energy and effort we pour in); Persistence (how long we keep working).
Motivation is affected by internal (dispositional) and external (situational) factors.

Brief historic Overview of Motivation
In the early 1900s it was believed that much of our behaviour was instinctive. However, this was replaced by ideas of unavoidably/motives and drives (Maslow for example, who focused on cognitive desires). The behaviouralist perspective (Skinner) highlighted the impact of the environment. Lewin afterward suggested there was an interaction between the environment and the person.
